The alignments of

Jupiter, Saturn & Uranus

This page describes the alignments of Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus from an astrological perspective and provides a timeline of those alignments from the 15th century to the Triple Conjunction of 2080, as well as a more detailed timeline of the alignments from the 20th century. It also points to some remarkable correlations between modern history and those alignments, which could be used as the starting point for further research.

Understanding the alignments of Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus

The simplest alignment of a set of planets is the conjunction, when the planets gather near the same longitude in the ecliptic within a certain orb, which can vary from a few degrees to 15 degrees or more. In addition to the conjunction, a number of additional aspects can be considered between the 3 planets, starting with the basic alignements formed by oppositions.

The synodic cycle of Saturn and Uranus takes 44 to 47 years and is the longest of the 3 cycles formed by Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus. And Jupiter is the fastest of those 3 planets. Therefore, it makes sense to use Saturn-Uranus alignments as the starting point for searching for Jupiter-Saturn-Uranus alignments. In other words, we can look for Jupiter-Saturn-Uranus alignments during the conjunctions, sextiles, squares, trines or oppositions of the Saturn-Uranus cycle. Is there is a Jupiter-Saturn or a Jupiter-Uranus alignments during that timeframe, then this can be defined as a Jupiter-Saturn-Uranus alignment. Given all the possible combinations of aspects between three planets, those alignments can take a great variety of shapes. Nevertheless, some alignments can be defined as the most basic one because of the simple geometrical patterns they form.

Alignments based on hard aspects

The waxing squares, the oppositions and the waning squares of the Saturn-Uranus cycles occur every 11-13 years, and they last for about 1 year, but sometimes up to 2 years. If, during that timeframe, Jupiter happens to make a hard aspect to Saturn and/or Uranus, then the alignment can form a conjunction, a square, an opposition, or a T-square.

Alignments based on trines

The trines between Saturn and Uranus occur every 14 to 16 years and last for about 1 to 2 years. If, during that timeframe, Jupiter makes a trine to Saturn and/or Uranus, then this configuration can be defined as a Jupiter-Saturn-Uranus alignment by trine.

The basic patterns formed by Jupiter-Saturn-Uranus alignments

In summary, the main alignments between those 3 giant planets can take the following shapes:

  • a Triple Conjunction, with the 3 planets aligned around the same longitude on the ecliptic.

  • an Opposition, with 2 planets conjunct each other and making an opposition to the third planet.

  • a Square, with 2 planets conjunct each other and making a square to the third planet.

  • a T-square, with 2 planets in opposition, and the third planet making a square to the other two.

  • a Trine, with 2 planets conjunct each other and making a trine to the third planet.

  • a Grand Trine, with each planet making a trine to the other two, forming an equilateral triangle.

  • a "double sextile", with 2 planets configured by trine, and the third planet at the mid-point, making two sextiles to the first 2 planets. An example of such alignment occurred in October 1957.

Timelines of the alignments of Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus

A timeline of the Triple Conjunctions and Oppositions from the 15th century

The conjunctions of Saturn and Uranus last for about 1 year. During that timeframe, Jupiter aligns with Saturn and Uranus by conjunction or opposition for a few months, forming a Triple Conjunction pattern or an Opposition pattern, as described above.

The following timeline highlights the Triple Conjunctions of Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus, and also the oppositions of Jupiter to the Saturn-Uranus conjunctions since the 15th century:

  • Sept 1443 to July 1444: Jupiter-Saturn-Uranus conjunction (within 11 to 16 degrees), after the Saturn-Uranus conjunction of 1442-43.

  • Nov 1484 to Jan 1486: as part of a very rare stellium of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune, the Jupiter-Saturn conjunction of November 1484 occurred within 30 degrees of Uranus, and the Jupiter-Uranus conjunction of January 1486 within 22 degrees of Saturn.

  • Jan-Feb 1534: Jupiter oppositions to Saturn and Uranus, after the Saturn-Uranus conjunction of June 1533.

  • Dec 1582 to May 1583: Jupiter-Saturn-Uranus conjunction (within 15 to 24 degrees), after the Saturn-Uranus conjunction of 1580.

  • July 1623: Jupiter-Saturn-Uranus conjunction (within 4 degrees), at the beginning of the Saturn-Uranus conjunction of 1623-24.

  • Oct 1671: Jupiter oppositions to Saturn and Uranus, after the Saturn-Uranus conjunction of March 1671.

  • Feb 1714: Jupiter oppositions to Saturn and Uranus before the Saturn-Uranus conjunction of October 1714.

  • Feb-March 1762: Jupiter-Saturn-Uranus conjunction (within 3 degrees), at the end of the Saturn-Uranus conjunction of 1761-62.

  • July 1802 to Sept 1803: Jupiter-Saturn-Uranus conjunction (within 28 to 17 degrees), before the Saturn-Uranus conjunction of 1805.

  • Oct 1851: Jupiter oppositions to Saturn, Uranus and Pluto during the triple conjunction of Saturn, Uranus and Pluto; and before the Saturn-Uranus conjunction of March 1852.

  • Oct 1900 to Nov 1901: Jupiter-Saturn-Uranus conjunction (within 20 to 27 degrees) after the Saturn-Uranus conjunction of 1897.

  • May 1921: Jupiter-Saturn conjunction making an opposition to Uranus, after the Saturn-Uranus opposition of Oct 1918 - June 1920.

  • May 1941: Jupiter-Saturn-Uranus conjunction (within 8 degrees) before the Saturn-Uranus conjunction of 1942. This triple conjunction occurred during the Uranus-Neptune trine of 1939-1943.

  • Aug 1989 - May 1990: after the Saturn-Uranus conjunction of Feb-Oct 1988, Jupiter oppositions to Saturn and Uranus during the triple conjunction of Saturn, Uranus and Neptune of Feb 1988 - Nov 1989 (within 9 to 7 degrees). This series of alignments occurred in the context of the Uranus-Neptune conjunction of 1993.

  • June 2010: Jupiter-Uranus conjunction making an opposition to Saturn at the end of the Saturn-Uranus opposition of Nov 2008 - Jul 2010.

  • Oct 2031: Jupiter opposition to Saturn and Uranus before the Saturn-Uranus conjunction of June 2032.

  • Feb 2080: Jupiter-Saturn-Uranus conjunction (within 5 degrees) after the Saturn-Uranus conjunction of 2079.

The timeline above shows that, during the Saturn-Uranus conjunctions that have occurred since the 15th century, Jupiter has made a conjunction or an opposition to Saturn and Uranus within a few months of the exact conjunction (at most within 11 months in 1921). This suggests that Jupiter should always be taken into account when looking at Saturn-Uranus conjunctions.

We have to go as far as 1398 to find an example where Jupiter did not make a tight conjunction or opposition to the Saturn-Uranus conjunction: in August 1399 Jupiter made a square to Saturn and Uranus, after the Saturn-Uranus conjunction of Apr-Oct 1398. And in January 1404 Saturn and Uranus where within 30 degrees with Jupiter at their midpoint.

The full cycle of Jupiter-Saturn-Uranus alignments from 1900 to 2080

In order to identify all the possible alignments between Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus we need to consider a timeframe of 180 years. We've identified the following alignments, based on conjunctions, oppositions, squares and trines, from the triple conjunction of 1900 to the triple conjunction of 2080:

  • Oct 1900 to Nov 1901: triple conjunction of Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus (within 20 degrees) after the Saturn-Uranus conjunction of 1897.

  • Nov 1910 : Jupiter-Saturn-Uranus wide T-square, with Jupiter opposing Saturn about 7 months after the 1909-10 Saturn-Uranus waxing square.

  • March 1914: Jupiter-Uranus conjunction making a trine to Saturn, after the Saturn-Uranus trine of 1912-13.

  • May 1921: Jupiter applying to its conjunction with Saturn after the 1918-20 Saturn-Uranus opposition

  • Jul-Aug 1927: Jupiter-Uranus conjunction making a trine to Saturn, during the Saturn-Uranus trine of 1925-27.

  • July 1930: Jupiter-Saturn-Uranus T-square, with Jupiter opposing Saturn during the 1930-31 Saturn-Uranus waning square.

  • Feb-May 1941: triple conjunction of Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus (within 7 degrees) before the Saturn-Uranus conjunction of May 1942.

  • Feb 1952: Jupiter-Saturn-Uranus T-square, with Jupiter opposing Saturn during the 1951-52 Saturn-Uranus waxing square, and Saturn applying to its conjunction with Neptune.

  • Apr-May 1955: Trine formed by the Jupiter-Uranus conjunction making a trine to Saturn, before the Saturn-Uranus trine of 1956-57.

  • Oct 1957: "double sextile" during the Saturn-Uranus trine of 1957, Jupiter reached the mid-point between Saturn and Uranus, making two exact sextiles to Saturn and Uranus. And Saturn was exactly conjunct the star Antares.

  • June 1965: Jupiter-Saturn-Uranus T-square, with Jupiter squaring the Saturn-Uranus opposition of 1965-67.

  • Feb 1974: Grand Trine of Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus, after the Saturn-Uranus trine of 1972-73.

  • April 1976: Jupiter-Saturn-Uranus T-square, with Jupiter opposing Uranus during the 1975-77 Saturn-Uranus waning square.

  • Apr-Sep 1986: Jupiter squares Saturn and Uranus before the 1988 Saturn-Uranus conjunction

  • Sept 1989: Jupiter opposition to Saturn and Uranus after the 1988 Saturn-Uranus conjunction (also including Neptune).

  • May 2000: Jupiter-Saturn conjunction during the Saturn-Uranus waxing square of 1999-2000.

  • June 2010: Jupiter-Uranus conjunction during the 2008-2010 Saturn-Uranus opposition.

  • June 2015: Grand Trine of Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus, before the Saturn-Uranus trine of 2016-17.

  • Dec 2020: Jupiter-Saturn conjunction during the 2021 Saturn-Uranus waning square.

  • Oct 2031: Jupiter opposing Saturn and Uranus before the Saturn-Uranus conjunction of 2032.

  • Nov 2041: wide square of Jupiter and Saturn to Uranus, after the 2040 Jupiter-Saturn conjunction and before the 2043 the Saturn-Uranus waxing square.

  • Feb 2045: wide Jupiter-Saturn-Uranus T-square, with Jupiter opposing Uranus after the 2043 the Saturn-Uranus waxing square.

  • May 2047: Grand Trine of Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus, during the Saturn-Uranus trine of 2047-48.

  • Jan 2056: wide Jupiter-Saturn-Uranus T-square, with Jupiter squaring Uranus before the Saturn-Uranus opposition of 2056-57.

  • Aug 2066: Jupiter-Uranus conjunction squaring Saturn at the very beginning of the Saturn-Uranus waning square of 2066-67.

  • Feb 2080: triple conjunction of Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus (within 5 degrees) after the Saturn-Uranus conjunction of 2079.

A more comprehensive list of Jupiter-Saturn-Uranus alignments, extending beyond the 180-years timeframe, would show how these tend to repeat every 180 years, but it would also show that this pattern is not stable across many centuries. As an example, 180 years before the Triple Conjunction of 1900-1901, around 1720, one could expect another Triple Conjunction. But in 1720 there was only a very wide stellium of Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus - within 37 degrees - after the Saturn-Uranus conjunction of 1714. And 180 years earlier, around 1540 there was not even such a stellium. The closest alignment around that time occurred in 1534, with Jupiter making an opposition to Saturn and Uranus after the Saturn-Uranus conjunction of 1533.

Correlations with the history of modern artefacts

The birth and evolution of modern artefacts such as the bicycle, the computer or nuclear technology correlate with Jupiter-Saturn-Uranus alignments.

The history of the bicycle

Remarkably, the "bike booms" that marked periods of fast growth in the history of the bicycle precisely correlate with Jupiter-Saturn-Uranus alignments:

  • Baron Karl von Drais' first ride of his newly invented draisienne took place in the summer of 1817, a few months before the Jupiter-Uranus-Neptune conjunction of Nov-Dec 1817, and a year before the first Saturn-Uranus square of 1818-20. Two years later, the draisienne, vélocipède or "dandy horse" craze of the summer of 1819 coincided with the Saturn-Uranus square of 1818-20 and the Uranus-Neptune conjunction of 1820.

  • The first bicycle craze started in 1867, during a Jupiter-Saturn-Uranus Grand Trine. By 1868 the first mass-production of bicycles had started in Europe and the United States.

  • In 1885 John Kemp Starley released the first commercially successful safety bicycle in England, and a year later they were being produced in the United States. This coincided with the Jupiter-Uranus conjunction of August 1886, during the Saturn-Uranus waning square of 1885-86. The year 1885 was also the birth year of the motorcycle and the motor car.

  • "In the year 1896, there was simultaneously an increase in bicycle popularity and a severe economic depression." (Wikipedia) This coincided with Jupiter making a square, in 1896, to the Saturn-Uranus conjunction that would become exact in 1897.

  • U.S. bike boom of 1965–1975 started with the Jupiter-Saturn-Uranus T-square of 1965 and ended with the next T-square of 1976. "At the height of the boom, in 1972, 1973, and 1974, more bicycles than automobiles were sold in the U.S" (Wikipedia). This height coincided with the Grand Trine formed by Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus in 1973-74.

  • In the 2010s, the rise of bicycle-sharing systems, and the increased popularity of electric bicycles may be correlated to the 2010 Jupiter-Uranus opposition to Saturn, and the Grand Trine of Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus in 2015.

  • In 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic has caused a dramatic increase in bicycle usage and a boom in bike sales around the world, already referred to as a "cycling explosion". This coincides with the approaching Jupiter-Saturn conjunction of December 2020 which will be making a square to Uranus.

The history of computers, Apple and Steve Jobs

We've taken quite some time to explore the history of computers through the alignments of Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus, and we've put together those "explorer tales" in a series of posts:

A number of inventors and entrepreneurs that made the history of computing were born during Jupiter-Saturn-Uranus alignments. Steve Jobs was born in February 1955 during a Jupiter-Uranus conjunction making a trine to Saturn. Aaron Swartz, the visionary internet hacktivist was born in November 1986 with Jupiter square Saturn and Uranus.

Aviation pioneers and pioneer aviators

Wilbur Wright was born in April 1867 during a Jupiter-Saturn-Uranus Grand Trine.

Amelia Earhart was born during the Saturn-Uranus conjunction of 1897, with Mars conjunct Jupiter. Antoine de Saint-Exupéry was born in June 1900 , at the beginning of the Jupiter-Saturn-Uranus conjunction, before the Jupiter-Uranus conjunction, with a tight Mars-Jupiter opposition and with Uranus within 1 degree of the star Antares. Jean Mermoz was born in December 1901, at the end of the Jupiter-Saturn-Uranus conjunction, with a tight Mars-Jupiter-Saturn conjunction, and Uranus within 29 degrees.

The atomic age and nuclear plant accidents

Martin Heinrich Klaproth discovered Uranium in 1789, the year of a Jupiter-Uranus conjunction trine Saturn.

The first Nuclear power and nuclear weapons coincided with the Jupiter-Saturn-Uranus conjunction of Feb-May 1941, marking the birth of the Atomic Age:

  • Plutonium was first produced and isolated on December 14, 1940, and chemically identified on February 23, 1941 at the Berkeley Radiation Laboratory.

  • The S-1 Committee on Uranium held its first meeting December 1941, and the Manhattan Project started in 1942.

  • The first nuclear reactor, the Chicago Pile-1, started in December 1942, six months after the Saturn-Uranus conjunction of May 1942.

The most critical nuclear plant accidents have coincided with Jupiter-Saturn-Uranus alignments:

  • the Kyshtym disaster of September 1957 and the Windscale fire of October 1957 coincided with a rare alignment: during the Saturn-Uranus trine of 1957, Jupiter reached the mid-point between Saturn and Uranus, making two exact sextiles to Saturn and Uranus. And Saturn was exactly conjunct the star Antares.

  • the Chernobyl disaster of April 1986 coincided with a Jupiter-Saturn square and Saturn approaching to its conjunction with Uranus within 14 degrees. Again, Saturn was exactly conjunct the star Antares: the accident occurred exactly one Saturn cycle after the Kyshtym disaster of September 1957.

  • the Tokaimura nuclear accident of September 1999 occurred during a Saturn-Uranus square, and a Jupiter-Neptune square, when Jupiter was approaching to its conjunction with Saturn within 13 degrees. At the time Uranus was within 12 degrees of Neptune following the conjunction of 1993.

  • the Fukushima nuclear disaster of March 2011 occurred 8 months after the Jupiter-Uranus conjunction of June 2010, and after the 2008-2010 Saturn-Uranus opposition. Remarkably, Chiron was within 3 degrees of Neptune, following the conjunction of February 2010. The previous Chiron-Neptune conjunction occurred in September 1945, within a month of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Correlations with World History

European wars in the late 18th century and the rise of Napoleon

Jupiter-Saturn-Uranus alignments also coincided with major milestones in the history of the world:

Remarkably, the 1796 T-square of Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus repeated 180 years later in 1976, when Steve Jobs founded Apple. Napoleon Bonaparte was born during a wide Jupiter-Saturn-Uranus T-square that occurred in 1769. Both birth charts have Jupiter-Uranus and Mars-Neptune alignments. For both men, a the time of their rise, in April 1796 and in April 1976, the Jupiter-Uranus opposition was approaching their natal Mars-Neptune alignment.

Napoleon Bonaparte's birth chart (born 15 August 1769 at 11:00 AM in Ajaccio, France) with the transits for the Battle of Montenotte (April 12, 1796)

The climax and turning point in World War II

The climax and turning point of World War II, when the United States and Japan entered the war in the Pacific and the Germans invaded Russia, coincides with the Jupiter-Saturn-Uranus conjunction of 1941-1942. Remarkably, it also coincided with an exact waning trine between Uranus and Neptune, marking an important step in the Uranus-Neptune cycle, after the opposition of 1906-1910.

Leaders that made History

Revolutions

  • The French Revolution of 1789 coincided very precisely with the Jupiter-Uranus conjunction of June 1989 that was making a trine to Saturn. Remarkably, three years later, the Convention abolished the monarchy on September 21, 1792, a month after the third Jupiter-Neptune conjunction of that year, which was making an opposition to Saturn in sidereal Aries, the sign of Saturn's fall. This is one of many interesting examples that suggest that Neptune is also strongly correlated to political revolutions, and that this archetypal topic is not exclusively associated to Uranus or Pluto.

  • The 1848 Revolutions coincided with a specific alignment of Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus: a series of Jupiter-Uranus waxing squares and of Jupiter-Saturn waxing trines from Sep 1847 to June 1848. At that time Saturn was within 14 degrees of Neptune, following their conjunction of Apr-Dec 1846.

  • In October 1851, the opposition of Jupiter highlighted the triple conjunction of Saturn, Uranus and Pluto that lasted the whole year 1851 and coincided with a number of revolutions: both the Taiping Rebellion and the Nian Rebellion started in China in 1851. There was also the 1851 Chilean Revolution and the French coup of 1851 in December.

  • In September 1989, the Jupiter opposition to Saturn and Uranus marked a climax during the triple conjunction of Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. The year 1989 was a turning point in modern history with the Revolutions of 1989 across Eastern Europe that culminated in November with the Fall of the Berlin Wall and the Velvet Revolution in Czechoslovakia. It was also the year of the Tiananmen Square protests. All those events that marked a turning point in the 20th century must be seen from the wider perspective of the triple conjunction of Saturn, Uranus and Neptune in 1989, before the Uranus-Neptune conjunction of 1993. However, it would be interesting to clarify the role played by Jupiter in that context, and to differentiate the topics correlated to Jupiter-Saturn-Uranus from the topics correlated to Saturn-Uranus-Neptune.

Correlations with the history of art, music and science

Great musicians and composers

The French composer Claude Debussy was born in August 1862, when Jupiter and Saturn were making a square to Uranus. The Spanish composer Enrique Granados was born during the Grand Trine of 1867. Louis Armstrong, Aaron Copland, Joaquín Rodrigo and Agustín Lara were born during the Triple Conjunction of 1900-1901. Chick Corea, Plácido Domingo, Martha Argerich and Christopher Hogwood during the Triple Conjunction of 1941.

The history of Rock music

Our page about Uranus-Neptune alignments includes a list of the generation of musicians born during the Uranus-Neptune trine of 1939-1943, many of which wrote the history of Rock music from the mid-1960s.

While Neptune's 5-year alignment with Uranus can be considered as the main astrological factor correlated to that generation of outstanding musicians, the specific timeframe of the Jupiter-Saturn-Uranus conjunction of 1941 seems to have given birth to some of the most unique representatives of that generation: Joan Baez and Herbie Hancock were born in early 1940, when the Jupiter-Saturn conjunction was 16 degrees away from Uranus. John Lennon was born in October 1940, during a tight Jupiter-Saturn conjunction within 12 degrees of Uranus, which was exactly conjunct the star Algol. Frank Zappa was born in December 1940 and Neil Diamond in January 1941. Ritchie Valens and Bob Dylan were born shortly after the Jupiter-Uranus conjunction of May 1941, when Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus were conjunct within 9 degrees, and with Uranus within 1 degree of Algol.

Otis Redding (Sep 1941), Paul Simon (October 1941), Art Garfunkel (Nov 1941) were born in the later part of that year, when Jupiter had moved more than 20 degrees away from Saturn and Uranus.

The years that marked the beginning of new styles of rock music also coincide with Jupiter-Saturn-Uranus alignments:

  • The birth of Classical rock can be correlated to the Jupiter-Saturn-Uranus T-square of June 1965

  • The emergence of Punk and New Wave in 1975-76 coincided with the Jupiter-Saturn-Uranus T-square of April 1976.

  • Grunge and alternative rock became popular in 1991, following the Jupiter opposition to Saturn and Uranus of Sept 1989.

  • From 2008-2010, Rock's decline as mainstream music coincides with the Jupiter and Uranus opposition to Saturn of June 2010.

Great architects

Some of the greatest modern architects were born during Saturn-Uranus alignments:

This is an open field for further explorations! ;-)

Great writers, great books, great newspapers

Blaise Pascal, the mathematician, physicist, and philosopher who invented one of the first mechanical calculators, was born in June 1623 during a Jupiter-Saturn-Uranus conjunction. Victor Hugo, Alexandre Dumas, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nikolay Yazykov, Vladimir Odoyevsky, Prosper Mérimée were all born during the triple conjunction of 1802-1803.

The first volume of Democracy in America by Alexis de Tocqueville was published in 1835, the year of a Jupiter-Saturn-Uranus Grand Trine. It is considered a milestone in political and social sciences, and has been described as "at once the best book ever written on democracy and the best book ever written on America."(Wikipedia). Herman Melville published his novel Moby-Dick in 1851, the year of a Jupiter opposition to a Saturn-Uranus-Pluto conjunction. Karl Marx published the first volume of Das Kapital in 1867, the year of the second Jupiter-Saturn-Uranus Grand Trine of the 19th century.

The New York Times was founded in September 1851 and the Reuters news service was founded in October 1851.

From the scientific breakthroughs of the 1800s to the Scientific Revolution of the 1900s

This scientific revolution of the 1900s is described in great detail and nuance by Richard Tarnas in Cosmos and Psyche, and put in the greater context of the Neptune-Pluto conjunction of the late 19th century, and the Uranus-Neptune opposition of the early 20th century. It's worth noting that Jupiter-Saturn-Uranus alignments coincided very precisely with the beginnings of those scientific revolutions.

The 1802-03 Jupiter-Saturn-Uranus conjunction coincided with the famous double-slit experiment that played a major role in the general acceptance of the wave theory of light, and is considered as one of the early milestones in the history of quantum physics.

Max Planck was born during a Jupiter-Uranus conjunction in 1858, with Jupiter sextile Saturn.

The 1900-01 Jupiter-Saturn-Uranus conjunction coincided with:
